In 1878, brothers Nicholas and Edward Fitzgerald had one goal in life: to create the finest ales known to man. After starting out in Castlemaine, Victoria, they decided they needed a world-class brewery (and warmer weather), so they packed up and moved to Brisbane. And so the Castlemaine Perkins brewery was born, known today as the home of XXXX.

What do the Xs in XXXX mean?

Beer quality was once measured in Xs. The brewery’s first brew produced was XXX Sparkling Ale. The results were promising, but something was missing. So in 1924, they perfected the recipe further, gaining a fourth X.

Supporting the troops

World Wars I and II saw XXXX distributed across the world for thirsty troops. For many a soldier, XXXX was the distinct taste of life back home. The diggers even affectionately nicknamed the lager ‘Barbed Wire’.

Striking GOLD

XXXX GOLD was launched in 1991. It’s a mid-strength beer that went on to become the best-selling beer in Australia.

The ultimate destination for mates trips away

In 2012, XXXX became the first beer brand to get its very own island – XXXX Island, designed to be the ultimate destination for mates’ trips away…

The current range features:

  • XXXX GOLD Australian Lager – Mid-strength meets full flavour with XXXX GOLD Australian Lager. XXXX GOLD Australian Lager has a balanced, smooth flavour and body, complemented by mild bitterness and just a trace of sweetness.
  • XXXX GOLD Australian Pale Ale – This mid-strength beer is made with speciality malts, ale-style yeast and Amarillo hops to give it more flavour than you might expect, with a crisp finish.
  • XXXX Bitter – Pure local water is combined with Australian malted barley, Queensland cane sugar, unique Golden Cluster hops and yeast grown on-site to create XXXX Bitter.
  • XXXX Summer Bright Lager – This full strength lager has a fruity aroma and smooth hop character.
  • XXXX Summer Bright Lager with Lime – This is made using the same recipe as XXXX Summer Bright Lager, but with a dash of lime added late in the brewing process.

To fully appreciate this iconic Queensland brand, a guided tour of the working brewery is highly recommended. The tours take place Monday through to Saturday, followed by beer tastings for those aged 18 and over. Under-fives are not suggested and those aged six to 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The tours start at the XXXX Brewery main entrance, fully enclosed shoes must be worn and bookings are essential. Finish up at the XXXX Alehouse serving lunch, dinner and fresh tap beer.
