For breathtaking 360-degree views across the Brisbane River and the city, the Wheel of Brisbane has become the absolute must-do for Brisbane visitors of all ages. Located in the Parklands at South Bank right in the heart of Brisbane’s cultural and entertainment district, the Wheel was constructed in 2008 as part of the 20th anniversary of Brisbane’s World Expo 88, and was erected on the transformed Expo site.
Each of the 42 fully enclosed and air-conditioned gondolas can accommodate up to six adults and two children, except for the VIP gondola, which seats up to four adults. The regular rides last for approximately 12 minutes and comprise four revolutions, with visitors travelling nearly 60 metres above the ground at the top of the ride.
A carefully composed audio system supplies a fascinating insight into the historical landmarks you’ll be able to see from your gondola, which include the Botanical Gardens, Mount Coot-tha, the Goodwill Bridge and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
Designed by Ronald Bussink, who has been creating giant wheels for over a quarter of a century and has designed similar wheels across the world in such cities as Niagara Falls, Paris, Kuala Lumpur, Belfast and Manchester, the Wheel of Brisbane is an R60 model – manufactured to the highest international health and safety standards.
There are frequent special events on to celebrate such festivities as Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, and those looking for something a little out of the ordinary can try either the Ride and Refresh Experience (which includes a 25-minute ride in a private gondola, with an appetiser share platter and drinks available from the bar) or the VIP Ride and Refresh Experience (which adds a personal music accompaniment, leather seats and tinted windows, plus complimentary Sirromet wine or soft drink).
For general admission, no booking is required, but online booking is necessary for special events, the Ride and Refresh Experiences and for groups of 20 or more.
The Wheel is open 10am to 10pm Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 11pm Friday and Saturday, although times may be adjusted to meet operational needs.
